stop fussing with perfection.”
At Gould, Karen studied silversmithing, pottery, and glassblowing. Upon
graduation, she was accepted into the
Rhode Island School of Design, where she
majored in jewelry and metalsmithing.
She spent a year in Rome through the
“RISD in Rome” enrichment program, and
wandered the city drawing and painting.
After completing her undergraduate
studies, she attended Boston University
for a year, and then returned to RISD to
complete her master’s in fine art. For a
time, she apprenticed for a jeweler in
NYC, making custom granulated 22k gold
pieces, and then set up a metalsmithing
studio for herself, exhibiting her work at
Spring 2025

show. She also explored educational career opportunities, guiding for Outward
Bound, and substitute teaching at Gould,
before landing her position at Fryeburg
Academy, where she taught until her
daughter Zoe was born in 1999. Karen
returned to jewelry making when the
demands of parenting began to ease, and
has been a full-time jeweler ever since.
I recently had the opportunity to
visit Karen’s studio, and she showed me
around, pointing out her favorite tools
among the scraps of silver, gemstones,
and works in progress stacked in trays.
“I’m like a child playing that doesn’t
like to put away their toys. It’s because
I’m excited to get back to my project
and I don’t want to lose my place. For
me, it’s like a bookmark.” She gave me a
