“Sometimes my father would go down to work and find
that the gas had been siphoned out of his truck,” Marvel
recalled.
The town used to block off part of the road each spring,
but as Marvel tells it, that didn’t stop “the stupid and the
adventuresome” from moving the sawhorses and tempting
fate. Most got stuck, and his father used a logging chain to
pull out a couple of vehicles each year, “usually with considerable cosmetic damage.”
Part of Davis Hill Road, from Old Mill Road to the first
intersection with Henderson Road, has been paved. But
from that junction to Brownfield Road, where Marvel lives,
remains dirt.
“The town has done wonders in terms of making the
road passable, but it’s actually a lot safer when it’s too
bumpy for speed,” he said, “and I always wish they would
wait longer between gradings. A rough road keeps the dust
down and makes life along its edges a lot more pleasant.”
