at the shop. Every Saturday, The Gear Doc hosts a gathering
for anyone in the community who likes to climb, where Page
does presentations about different trips to help climbers
prepare, such as to Denali in Alaska, where he may talk about
weather, and mountain medicine, and do a Q&A session. In
addition, these gatherings allow climbers to share their adventures, what they’ve learned, and how others can prepare.
“I enjoy sharing what I know, especially with this Alaska
stuff,” says Page. He has become a mentor in the local climbing community and cares about preparing climbers for their
expeditions, no matter how big or small.
Clarke says that the majority of things she knows about
climbing are from shared knowledge in the community. She
got into climbing in her teens, but had a difficult time finding
a community of like-minded climbers in the area she grew up
in, saying, “It just wasn’t like the community we have up here
in Conway.” After starting her job at The Gear Doc and IME,
Clarke has had an easier time meeting people with similar
interests and getting outside for climbing adventures.
Page never wanted to run a big company. Although the
shop is small and often hard to spot, it has helped, encouraged, and educated avid climbers in the North Conway area
and beyond.
“He’s very humble about it, but he makes a huge impact,”
says Clarke. Word has gotten out about there being a gear
doctor in the area—he saves people money, helps them go on
once-in-a-lifetime experiences, and sometimes even hands
them chili when they walk into the shop.
