where they walked to Cranmore to ski.
Theriault moved to Jackson right after graduating from
Salem State College, and never left. In 1970, while living at
the Skimos Ski Club, he began teaching at Wildcat six days a
week, for $90. To supplement his income, he waited tables
at the Dana Place Inn, where he made more in tips in two
nights than in a week on the slopes. But as Theriault noted,
“No one gets into skiing to make money.” He made enough to
get by.
He’s also been teaching cross-country skiing in Jackson
since his arrival, first out of the Jack Frost Ski shop, which
ran a ski school, and then for the Jackson Ski Touring
Foundation (JSTF). Initially, JSTF maintained the trails and
provided a ski patrol. In 50-plus years as an instructor,
including for the Eastern Slope Ski Club (ESSC), Theriault
has taught all ages and levels of skiers. He enjoys fine-tuning
the skills of experienced skiers as well as seeing first-timers
make rapid progress.
He taught and or skied with 10th Mountain Division veterans, men who cut ski trails for the Civilian Conservation
Corps, and instructors from Austria. “I just loved hearing
them talk,” he said.
Theriault also assisted Al Risch, the late Wildcat ski
patrol director, in guiding backcountry ski trips into Tuckerman Ravine. His job was to lug 50-pound packs for the
clients. It was in the ravine that Theriault got what he calls
his claim to fame—his picture on the cover of Skiing magaWinter 2024/25
