The sport has evolved with the gear, and that has
made skiing and teaching easier. “The nice thing now is the
equipment has changed so much,” Grubb said. With shaped
skis, you get on edge to turn, unlike getting out of the snow
to turn on straight skis. He tells students, especially guys,
“Skiing is more like dancing and less like football. You don’t
have to muscle it.”
Seeing his students making progress is what keeps
Grubb coming back, especially when they get that aha!
moment when something clicks.
This season, he will again be an instructor in Cranmore’s
Golden Gliders, a program for older skiers. One of the

Young of Center Conway.
With almost a half-century of teaching under his belt,
Grubb has a few stories to tell. One is a particular favorite.
At Breckenridge, he was following a group of more than a
dozen beginners up the lift. When the first two skiers were
about to disembark, they dropped their poles. Thinking
that was how things were done, all the rest of the newbies
followed suit. “I had me a huge pile of rental poles of various
sizes underneath the chair lift. It was insane,” Grubb said
with a laugh.
