Some of the mountain’s more memorable
weather events recorded on Mount Washington.
• On April 12, 1934, a wind speed of 231 miles per hour
was recorded on the summit—the second highest
wind speed recorded in the world, and the highest
ever recorded by a staffed weather station.

• On July 20, 1996, an unusually strong low-pressure
system developing along the St. Lawrence River
brought summer snow showers to the summit, as well
as 24 hours of high winds averaging 100 miles per hour,
with the peak gust measuring in at 154 miles per hour.
• On February 25, 1969, 49.3 inches of snow fell on the
summit in a 24-hour period, a daily record.
• On February 4, 2023, the station tied its record low
temperature of -47 degrees. The previous record was
set on January 28, 1934.
• The same storm event produced a calculated wind chill of
-109 degrees, the lowest wind chill ever reported in the U.S.
