Countless numbers of recreational skiers, amateur racers, and
burgeoning Olympians have called Great Glen their home, and
have either bought their skis in the ski shop with Nate or had
them tuned up by Eli Walker. Employees love what they do,
love where they work, and it shows through sharing their
experiences and knowledge, leading to the finest customer
service and support.
“Having started at Great Glen as an intern at $46.17 a
week—I had no idea what would unfold for opportunities in the
next 25+ years,” said Harvey. “Yes, seasonal staff come and go,
but a lot end up coming back! It’s the customer base that keeps
us thriving. Reading customer reviews makes us feel proud as
individuals and strong as an outdoor center.”
All employees, new or seasoned, have their part of the
Glen’s story of resilience, adaptability, and connectedness. And
they couldn’t do it without the dedication and support from
volunteers who help with all types of events, and especially at
the 24 Hours of Great Glen race. They too are drawn into the
interwoven fabric of land and memory at Great Glen.
Stories are countless, and we often talk about the “time
when …” with a laugh, and sometimes, a cry. We honor all of
those who have come before and have helped to shape this
place and sense of place. The roots of Great Glen are deep, and
they spread near and far.
It’s this often-indescribable magic of the Glen that has made
us who we are today, and will drive us into the next 30 years at
Great Glen Trails, for the local community and its visitors.
Located at the base of the Mt. Washington
Auto Road in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, Great Glen Trails Outdoor Center offers
summer and winter activities and events for
families, friends, and groups of all ages. In
the winter, enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow tubing, or a unique winter
tour on the Mt. Washington SnowCoach. Great
Glen grooms over 20 kilometers of rolling carriage roads and
has an additional 25 kilometers of ungroomed off-track ski and
snowshoe trails. In the summer, take a guided wildlife kayak
tour, or rent bikes for the family-friendly trail system. Great Glen
offers whitewater kayak instruction, and sunset kayak trips. Trail
running and walking on the scenic trails is free! Family-owned
and operated since 1994, Great Glen Trails celebrates 30 years
this December. To learn more, visit www.greatglentrails.com.
Thank yous!
Thank you to my friend, Lisa McCoy, for first bringing me
to this magnetizing place and helping me with this article;
to Nordic Nate for waiting for me at the top of each hill
when we skate ski after work; and to each Great Glenner
who has taken the time to share their own memories from
the Glen, like Howie Wemyss. Each one of us has our own
recipe of experiences here, and the secret sauce is the
sense of place that one feels here at Great Glen Trails.
